WMS (warehouse management system)

Software that directs and records warehouse work, such as receiving, putaway, picking, counting, and shipping, much of it executed by workers on mobile devices.

The network analogy

A job scheduler for physical work: it creates tasks, assigns them to workers, and expects a confirmation for each one.

Why it matters for wireless

WMS work is executed and confirmed on mobile devices, so WMS transactions are one of the traffic types you have to plan for alongside automation traffic in a warehouse.

One vendor’s documentation lists typical WMS functions: receiving, multiple picking strategies, counting, wave processing, and packing. Workers carry out receiving, putaway, picking, and counting tasks in a mobile app, and the system can require them to confirm locations and quantities by scanning bar codes.

Some handhelds reach their host system through terminal emulation, a live session to a back-end server. One terminal-emulation vendor sells a server that keeps the host session open while the device is off the network, so the user returns to the same state on reconnect, and pitches it for devices that may not have a reliable Wi-Fi connection. That is a vendor describing its own product. Ask whether your handheld sessions survive a reconnect.

A WMS is business software, not a controller. On the air, the question is which of its flows stop work when they stall, and that is a question for the integrator.
