OMRON MD series network requirements

OMRON's MD-650 and MD-900 manual asks for at least -60 dBm, round trips of 10 ms or less, no more than two access points heard at -85 dBm, and 802.11 a/b/g, and says a lone AMR can run without Wi-Fi while a fleet cannot.

Values

ParameterValueCondition
Minimum signal strength-60 dBm1Recommended minimum; OMRON calls -40 dBm or stronger ideal
Co-channel access pointsNo more than two detectable access points at -85 dBm, and no more than one above -85 dBm, at any location1Listed as Channel Interference
Latency10 ms1Maximum recommended round-trip latency
Wireless standardIEEE 802.11 a/b/g2Manual and datasheet agree
Wi-Fi security methodsWPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK, PEAP-MSCHAPv2, EAP-TLS1Encryption TKIP/RC4 or CCMP/AES; OPEN is selectable but marked not recommended; no WPA3 listed
Bandwidth per AMR50 average, unlikely to exceed 500 kbps1Rises when MobilePlanner actively manages AMRs or debug tools run; payloads that stream through the AMR's wireless interface add more
CoverageConstant service throughout the workspace for a fleet1OMRON allows partial coverage for a single or segregated AMR where no commands or status are needed, and recommends a dedicated network restricted to the AMRs
Effect of a poor connectionFrequent disconnections may leave an AMR unable to reconnect, requiring user intervention1OMRON also lists failed Jobs or Goals from packet loss, unintended behavior if Fleet Manager parameters change while an AMR is disconnected, and collisions between AMRs in close proximity
Onboard controller traffic over Wi-FiPort forwarding between the User LAN and the wireless network lets the onboard NX102 controller exchange data over Wi-Fi1Configured in SetNetGo; the manual's example connects an EtherNet/IP coupler unit to the NX102 over the wireless network using CIP tag data links
Roam scan settingsBackground scan every 3 s by default; fewer channels selected gives faster roams3Scanning drops to one tenth as often while signal is above the RSSI roam threshold (default 50, unit not stated)
Maximum roam timeNot published by the vendor1Checked the MD manual and the FLOW Core manual
Fast roaming supportNot published by the vendor1No mention of 802.11r, 802.11k, 802.11v or key caching in the MD manual or the FLOW Core manual
Ports, AMR to Fleet ManagerTCP 37; TCP/UDP 5000; TCP/UDP 7272; UDP 10000 and up4Allocate at least twice as many UDP ports from 10000 as there are AMRs; bidirectional traffic must be allowed

When it loses the network

Behavior
A single AMR can keep navigating without Wi-Fi using its stored map; in a fleet, Fleet Manager connectivity is required. OMRON does not state whether a fleet AMR stops, finishes its job, or continues when the link drops.
Timeout
Wireless watchdog timer, user-set in SetNetGo; no default published3
Recovery
With the watchdog enabled, the AMR resets its wireless interface and tries to reconnect; OMRON warns frequent disconnections may require user intervention. After a Fleet Manager failover, AMRs take 1 to 3 minutes to reconnect and resume.
