Wi-Fi 8 edges toward real hardware and operator labs while the FCC opens a UWB rulemaking, and an opinion piece frames private 5G as factory infrastructure.
Wi-Fi 8 shows up in operator labs and preorders as FCC opens UWB docket
Wi-Fi NOW, Oct 4, 2026
A Brazilian operator and Qualcomm demonstrated Wi-Fi 8 (IEEE 802.11bn) in a lab, including Dynamic Subband Operation, which allocates radio resources by each device's capability and conditions. TP-Link opened preorders for a Wi-Fi 8 router in several countries but not the US, lacking FCC approval. The FCC also opened a UWB rulemaking, docket 26-245.
On the plant floor. Wi-Fi 8 is still ahead of final standardization and early products are home gear, so there are no industrial APs to plan around yet. If you run UWB for real-time location, follow the FCC docket, since the rules govern what tags and anchors can do.
Opinion: treat private 5G as factory infrastructure, as Germany's local spectrum did
Compare the Cloud, Oct 4, 2026
An opinion piece argues UK firms should assess private 5G like any plant asset, with an operations budget and a named owner. It points to Germany's regulator offering local spectrum and network identifiers to industrial users, and advises starting from a measurable production problem. It cautions that spectrum assignments do not prove working factories.
On the plant floor. Local spectrum access lowers the barrier to private 5G, but an assignment is not a working network. Pilot against a specific problem such as interrupted vehicle movements, test with your own devices on site, and name who owns maintenance and security updates.
