PROFIsafe

PI's functional safety profile, standardized as IEC 61784-3-3, that carries safety data over PROFINET or PROFIBUS under the black channel principle.

The network analogy

A safety layer riding as payload inside ordinary PROFINET frames, with its own sequence numbers, timer, addressing, and CRC.

Why it matters for wireless

PI lists wireless safety transmission for AGVs among PROFIsafe uses, but the PROFIsafe watchdog still bounds how long the radio may stall, so roams and retries have to fit inside it.

PI states PROFIsafe is an international standard, IEC 61784-3-31, rated to SIL 3 per IEC 61508 and PL e, category 4, per ISO 13849. Safety messages travel as the payload in PROFINET frames between an F-host and its F-devices, protected by consecutive numbering, a watchdog with acknowledgment, an F-address, and a CRC.

PI names wireless safety-related transmission for driverless transport systems, AGVs, and cranes as applications. Under the black channel principle the radio sits outside the safety rating; the watchdog is where its worst case shows up.
